2.5.26 Recording of News Conference re release of Ridglan Dogs, Wisconsin, US (Unchained TV coverage)
Although this represents a tremendous win, the Center for a Humane Economy, one of the organizations involved in the deal, acknowledges that agreement has been reached to release 1,500 dogs so far and negotiations are continuing regarding the remaining beagles.
27.4.26 Parliamentary debate on petition calling for end to testing on dogs and other animals
Predictably, Ian Murray MP, Minister of State (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology), maintained that:
the reality is that the technology is not yet advanced enough for alternative methods to replace the use of animals completely. For now, animal testing and research plays an important role in supporting the development of new medicines and cutting-edge medical technologies for humans and animals
Irene Campbell, MP who led the debate countered with I thank the Minister for his response, although I am sure he is not surprised that I disagree with quite a bit of it. (...) I will end with the words of Camp Beagle: "Animal testing is outdated, unreliable and cruel"
Well said, Irene Campbell
24.4.26 World Day for Animals in Laboratories (WDAIL)
'The use of animals in invasive, regulated research represents the institutionalization of a preethical view of animals. The normalization of animal experiments over the last 150 years has been based on flawed moral arguments that can no longer be justified given deeper contemporary understanding of animal sentience.'
'Normalizing the Unthinkable: The ethics of using animals in research', a report of the Working Group of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, 2015
While Wales Against Animal Experiments focuses on highlighting the flawed scientific arguments in favour of animal research, together with the human relevant methods at our disposal, to mark WDAIL it is only right to acknowledge the ethical reasons for abolishing this archaic practice. May it end soon!
19.4.26 Animal Aid Exposé - new footage filmed inside UK laboratories in 2025. It shows dogs, pigs, rabbits, rats and monkeys being used in routine, regulated testing. The footage was gathered by members of staff and is deeply distressing to witness – and yet it remains legally sanctioned violence. The story has been published by The Daily Mail
The website where the footage is shared has a witness mode, and a safe mode. The safe mode explains the images and what the animals are experiencing, but the images are blurred. Please watch and share it widely.

18.3.26 Two US departments (NIH and FDA) issue written announcements in support of their roadmap away from animal models:
NIH announced more than $150 million to develop and scale research methods that better simulate human biology and reduce reliance on animal models. “NIH’s investment in NAMs is critical to our mission to carry out gold-standard research.”
The FDA issued a draft guidance intended to help drug developers validate new approach methodologies (NAMs) to be used instead of animal testing in drug development. "Technological advances are allowing us to move beyond animal testing in drug development, which has a poor track record of predicting safety and efficacy in humans," said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H
NB The US's acknowledgement of the poor performance of animals models is in stark contrast to the UK Government's stated position.
1.3.26 Cardiff University part of new pan-European doctoral network advancing human-relevant neuroscience tools beyond animal models
27.2.26 Lord Patrick Vallance, the minister charged with leading the Govt strategy on replacing animals in science, to act as keynote speaker at PRO-ANIMAL TESTING CONFERENCE on the topic of 'Communicating the Continued Need for Animal Research' in June 2026.

5.1.26 UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) report, ‘Technology alternatives to animals in life sciences research’ published.
Despite the fact that POST claims that it is 'an impartial research and knowledge exchange service', its report presents opinions advanced by proponents of animal research (eg representatives of the Mary Lyon Centre and the National Mouse Genetics Network) as fact.
